Flight crews have a very difficult job, and they all need to have some qualification, at least a certificate in aviation. This is often only the beginning, as they will then need to go on to further types of qualification, including diplomas or even degrees. What is important is the early stages, where gaining the right types of certificate, going up the levels carefully, ensures that the student covers every aspect of aviation knowledge and learning. In studying each of the certificates from the start, students can build up a level of competency which ensures that they know exactly what they are doing.
In Australia, there are high standards about the skills expected of those working in the aviation industry, and this is why there is such a high demand on teaching even the basics. Students must ensure that they have learned all the skills by working through each certificate in education, starting with the first. At this level, the students will learn skill levels such as cleaning areas such as food handling stations, securing cargo areas, and cleaning facilities for the use of passengers. These skills will then lead on to the next certificate.
For flight crews, the next certificate will include learning flight component details. This can include subjects such as serving customers on aircraft, including advice, managing in-flight cuisine and retail services, and helping passengers to arrive and depart. There may also be special sessions on helping passengers who have special needs, and securing baggage and cargo into the aircraft. These qualifications are starting to teach the student how to handle a flight, and how to manage the basic service skills they will need when they are working on board a plane.
Level III of the certificate in aviation is designed to carry on the work of the last qualification, and help students to gain more experience. This certificate will start to introduce the skills necessary to handling difficult flights, including responding to emergencies and abnormal events within the aircraft. Students will also learn the essential skills of keeping people safe within the plane, and using their knowledge to provide the passengers with a good experience when flying. For airlines which offer a first class service, flight crew will also be expected to know how to handle this area of the airplane, and how to provide food and drink, and even pour wine.
Working on these qualifications online can help a student to learn in a way which seems most appropriate to them. They might consider, for example, taking more time to learn one aspect of the course (perhaps the emergency training, for example), while feeling happy to go quickly through other parts. Learning online allows future aviation staff to do just this, learning at their own pace to get exactly what they need from the lessons. Universities and taught courses cannot provide this, but learning online can, and can still give a good, fully accredited qualification at the end of the course.
